Pregnancy is a complex arrangement of all of the correct hormones. It’s all a timing game of everything lining up, being in exactly the right place at the right time. Two of the most important hormones that play a role in pregnancy are hCG and Progesterone. Let’s learn more about how these important hormones affect pregnancy.

1 What Is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)

HCG, also known as human chorionic gonadotropin, is the “pregnancy hormone”. It is the hormone that is detected through at home pregnancy tests. HCG is produced by the pregnancy, within the uterus, as a result of the developing placenta.

Once the fertilized embryo implants, the levels of HCG begin to increase until they reach the level that they can be detected through an at home pregnancy test. Experts say that the levels of HCG can begin to be measured and detected from about the 11th or 12th day post conception, but it can be tricky to assess at this stage. This is why most pregnancy tests ask you to wait until your missed period in order to get the most accurate results.

2 The Difference Between HCG and Progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone that is similar in many ways to HCG, but also has lots of differences. While HCG is produced by the pregnancy, progesterone is produced by the ovary of the pregnant woman. Progesterone levels that are too low can leave the uterus in a much weakened state, and this can mean that the pregnancy will not progress properly.

Adequate progesterone levels are needed not only during pregnancy but before pregnancy as well. If a woman does not have high enough levels of progesterone, pregnancy might not be able to occur in the first place. If it is already known that a woman has low progesterone levels, she might need to supplement with progesterone cream before getting pregnant.

3 How HCG and Progesterone Work Together

As you can see, both progesterone and HCG are very important hormones when it comes to pregnancy and fertility. When you get pregnant, you will learn to pay attention to both your HCG and Progesterone levels if there is a potential problem. Otherwise, you might not know anything about these two hormones.

The fertility process and trying to conceive is very difficult and very detailed, if you are not naturally very fertile. Progesterone and HCG are both very crucial hormones when it comes to pregnancy and conception.

If you have any questions about fertility and these two important hormones, ask your doctor. He or she will be able to give you personalized information for your specific case and can even check your levels for you so that you can see if they are at acceptable levels.
