How Expensive is Fertility Treatment?

By

Fertility treatments are some of the best ways to make it easier for couples to become pregnant when they have been struggling for an extended period of time. Usually, couples in this situation have been trying to conceive for longer than a year before they turn to fertility treatments.

When it comes to these procedures, there are plenty of different methods to choose from. Some are rather inexpensive, but others are extremely high in cost. Learning more about them will help you to make the best decision.

Fertility Medications

Medications is usually where couples will start when they are trying to conceive, but not being successful. Doctors will often prescribe medication to help control when and how a woman ovulates. The first medications you will be offered are oral types. These sometimes will be paid for by insurance companies, which makes it easier for you to afford them.

Stronger medications are available through injections. These are not typically covered by insurance companies, and you will most likely need to pay for them yourself. For the most part, oral medications will typically cost around $100 per month and you will try them for three to six months. Injections may cost well more than this, into the $1000s per month.

Treatment Options

Two of the most common treatments are IUI and IVF. IUI is far more cost-effective and usually only costs $200-$300 per session. With this treatment option, doctors will inject sperm directly into the uterus of the woman when she is ovulating. This price increases if donor sperm is used or if any tests or medications are required.

IVF is one of the most expensive options. It is a procedure that can be used with either donor eggs and sperm or by eggs and sperm that are removed from the couple who is trying to conceive. When you purchase donor eggs and sperm, the costs will increase even more.

During this procedure, doctors will take the sperm and the eggs and fertilize the eggs in a laboratory setting. This will create an embryo. After the embryo has been created, it can then be placed back into the woman’s uterus, with the hopes of it developing into a pregnancy.

As before mentioned, IVF is rather expensive, with procedures averaging $12,000 or more. There are some ways you can make the treatments cheaper, however. For example, some facilities offer some of your money back if the procedure is not successful the first time. This is one way to make the process easier to afford for couples who are struggling to conceive.

Fertility treatments are extremely helpful for couples who are trying to conceive. Unfortunately, not all couples are able to afford them because they are so expensive. To determine the best way to become pregnant, you should discuss all your options with your fertility doctor.
