Is Emergen-C Safe To Take When Pregnant?
Emergen C is an over the counter dietary supplement containing many vitamins and minerals, but most of all, high amounts of Vitamin C. Emergen C is inexpensive and can be found online, or in most grocery or drug stores.
There are several different varieties of the popular supplement, including a Kid’s version, a heart health version, a bone and joint version, a vitamin D and calcium version, a Lite version, an immune formula, and several different flavors of the original formula.
Most of the formulas contain 1000mg of vitamin c to boost the immune system, and, depending on the different formulas, might contain additional vitamins and minerals.
Pregnancy can wreak havoc on the immune system and can make a pregnant woman more susceptible to illnesses. It can help to safeguard you from colds and flu that can sometimes be worse during pregnancy than it would at another time.
However, if you are already taking a prenatal vitamin or a multivitamin, make sure to discuss with your doctor about the safety of taking both products together. Many times, it will be fine to take both, but there might be certain cases where you will be taking too much of one certain vitamin, so you have to be careful.
For instance, a pregnant woman’s daily intake of vitamin C is supposed to stay under 2000 mg per day, so if that doesn’t happen, it could cause damage.
If you think that taking Emergen C in addition to your prenatal vitamin will put you over the limit for too much Vitamin C, there are other things that you can do to boost your immune system. First of all, eat a healthy and well balanced diet so that you can have enough vitamins and minerals to keep your body and it’s functions on track.
Next, make sure to wash your hands often and thoroughly in order to kill any germs that might be hiding. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day to flush the germs out of your system, and make sure to get enough sleep at night so that your body has enough time to heal itself.
Try to lower your stress levels, since stress causes lowered immunity. Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes, to help your body to get stronger and to build up immunity. All of these things are important to do and can mean the difference between getting sick and staying well. If you have any questions about using a dietary supplement like Emergen C during your pregnancy, make sure to consult your doctor.
