1 A Royal Honor

Is there anything sweeter? Sir Marcus Setchell, the Queens’ former gynecologist described delivering baby prince George as a “lovely experience”, while he was being knighted by George’s father, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.

William dubbed Sir Marcus a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony. The ceremony took place on Tuesday March 18, and Prince William gave awards to quite a few deserving people that day, but most notably, Kate’s doctor who helped through her very severe morning sickness and also helped deliver the baby Prince.

2 Bouncing Baby George

Sir Marcus told everyone that delivering the new prince was a fantastic way to end his career and that William had told him that Prince George was now a “bouncing baby”. Sir Marcus served Queen Elizabeth for 24 years before retiring at the end of 2013.

In that time, he delivered quite a few royal babies. He also treated Sophie, Countess of Wessex, delivering her two children (James, Viscount Severn, 6, and Lady Louise Windsor, 10) and cared for Sophie after her ectopic pregnancy in 2001.

3 Very Grateful

Sir Marcus expressed his gratitude and happiness that he got the opportunity to work for the royal family: “Well of course it’s a great honor and it’s very nice that I was able to serve her for 24 years and that the culmination of it was that Prince George should be born.

Being a gynecologist and obstetrician must be one of the nicest jobs in the world. There are sometimes things where people are having difficulty getting pregnant or having problems gynecologically but a great part of the job is thoroughly joyful and it’s just a wonderful job to have done. I think even after doing this job for 40 years every birth is exciting, moving and lovely.”

4 Thanks For The Service

Getting an award of the Royal Victorian Order is very high honor. Awards made under the Royal Victorian Order are in the Queen’s personal gift and are bestowed independently of 10 Downing Street. They recognize service to the Royal Family.

What a high honor for Sir Marcus, and how fitting that Prince William would be the one to do the honors himself. We hope that Sir Marcus enjoys his retirement and his new knighthood as well! He has worked very hard serving the royal family for a very long time and now he deserves some rest and relaxation!
