Can Chocolate Reduce Preeclampsia Risk?
Chocolate is a friend to just about any woman. For the most part, it is also something that is concerned unhealthy. However, new research is actually showing that it can be something that helps women avoid preeclampsia when they are pregnant.
What is Preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia is a condition that women develop during the second trimester of their pregnancy. It is something that causes the blood pressure to be elevated. Protein will also be found in the urine of a woman who has preeclampsia.
There are many risks associated with preeclampsia. For example, the baby could be born prematurely or the mother could have a seizure or a stroke. Some of the common symptoms related to preeclampsia are stomach pains, nausea, abnormal weight gain and swelling and headaches.

How does Chocolate Help?
One ingredient that is found in chocolate, specifically dark chocolate is called theobromine. This chemical has actually been shown to help relax blood vessels. It can also stimulate the heart. For years, this chemical has been used to help treat high blood pressure. Chest pains and the hardening of the arteries are also treatable with theobromine.
When you consume the right amount of this ingredient during your first and second trimesters, it can actually work with your body to help keep your blood pressure low and in the normal range. Research has shown that this helps women to avoid developing preeclampsia and avoid the dangers of it.
Are there other Foods?
Along with dark chocolate, there are actually several types of food that can help you get the right amount of theobromine in your diet. For example, kiwi, raisins, watermelon and bananas all have an increased amount of the chemical naturally inside them. Garlic is also something you can add to your diet to increase the amount of theobromine that you consume.
So, while you are pregnant, it is a good idea to enjoy a few of these foods on a regular basis. This can be a nice surprise for women who have a bit of a sweet tooth. But, keep in mind that you should not overdo it in the sweet department. Instead, always stick with a healthy, well-balanced diet that will help you get all the nutrients you and your baby need to stay healthy.
