It is estimated that about 1 out of every 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Many of these miscarriages occur early on in the pregnancy, before the woman is even aware of the pregnancy. This is called a chemical pregnancy.

These occur before a woman has been pregnant for 5 weeks, which is when the embryo will first be detectable by an ultrasound. In many instances, these types of miscarriages often go unnoticed because they will mimic the woman’s natural period.

What Happens in a Chemical Pregnancy?

When a woman has a chemical pregnancy, this means that the embryo was not able to attach to the uterine lining. There are a number of reasons that this may be the case. For example, some types of birth control will cause this type of situation.

Other women may not develop a healthy uterine lining, which will make it harder for the embryo to attach. The lining is normally developed over the course of the cycle so that it is healthy for the embryo. When the lining does not develop properly, it is possible for the embryo to pass rather than attach.

What Does a Chemical Pregnancy Mean?

For the most part, there is very little a woman can do to prevent a chemical pregnancy from occurring. In fact, the only way to determine if you have had a chemical pregnancy is by testing your blood and urine for hCG. If you have had a chemical pregnancy, this hormone will be present in your system even when you are no longer pregnant.

When one occurs, you should keep in mind that there is nothing you could have done differently when you were trying to conceive. However, you will want to talk to your doctor about the chemical pregnancy and look for any reason that one may have occurred. At times, there are some medical conditions that could cause a chemical pregnancy.

Before you begin trying to conceive again, you should take time to deal with your emotions and improve your overall health. Sometimes, this is something that can make it easier to conceive and carry a baby to term.

Also, remember that just because you have had a chemical pregnancy in the past that this doesn’t necessarily mean you will have issues in the future. Many women have a chemical pregnancy and go on to have healthy babies not long after. At times, your body may simply not be ready to sustain a pregnancy, and you may simply need to wait until it is healthier.
